Savannah Breeze

A couple weeks ago I visited Atlanta to spend time with the boy and his family. I had been to Atlanta once (not counting flight connections) for a wedding and loved the vibe of the city. This time, though, I was excited to explore the South — the graceful antebellum homes, the genial hospitality, the rich food. Of course, Atlanta retains some of that character, but we decided to take a road trip to see what is arguably the cultural center of the Southern Low Country, Savannah. We booked a room at the modern and sophisticated Andaz Hotel and off we went...

The humidity in Savannah wasn't much better than in Key West. I opted for comfort when I picked out this breezy, loose-fitting yet incredibly flattering Madewell chambray dress. I love the white Moroccan-inspired embroidery that gives this piece a little bit extra character. I styled it with what I think will become my favorite summer shoe — these sandals look dressy yet are so incredibly comfortable.

On our first day, we explored the River Front and stuffed our faces with freshly made pralines and salt-water taffy at the various candy shops. We walked around the city, stumbling upon adorable specialty shops (such as this wonderful outpost of the Savannah Bee Company) and restaurants. I was enchanted by the vibe of Savannah, with its rusty-colored bricks, elegant mansions, and colorful flowers. I loved discovering old-fashioned advertisements painted on to brick walls, such as this one announcing the cure for migraines.

One of my favorite finds was The Paris Market & Brocante on West Broughton Street. So many treasures are hidden inside that magical, eclectic shop — I spent so much time here that the boy nearly had to yank me out. Unique & vintage books, foods, decor and other home furniture & accessories (many of them picked-up on the owners' travels around the world) can be found here to design and inspire the ultimate shabby chic lifestyle. Need a respite from the scorching sun? You can also drop by their Parisian-style café to indulge in an iced-coffee and some macaroons.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our Savannah trip! I'll post Part 2 of our trip tomorrow. In the meantime, here are some recommendations in case you find yourself in this historic city!

  • A.lure Restaurant — A modern approach to traditional Southern Low Country cuisine, we absolutely loved the Crab Cakes. The service was also impeccable.
  • The Olde Pink House — More traditional Southern cuisine is served at the Olde Pink House, an 18th century mansion. The restaurant is huge and service is surprisingly prompt given its size. The different dining rooms, located in different rooms of the house, are incredibly charming. The cheese grits were perfect.
